Types of Theology

Video:

There are many ways to understand Theology and many definitions. Basically Theology boils down to the idea of God. Using this definition everyone has some form of theology be it Theistic in nature, Atheistic, Secular, Agnostic, or otherwise.

The goal of the course "is not so much to teach good theology, as important as that is, but to teach people to think."

There are several way of looking at Theology:
Irenic Theology:
* Theology that is done peaceably, accurately representing all views, even when you oppose them. (the main way this course looks at theology)
Polemic Theology:
*Theology that is done in a warlike manner inside the Church, prophetically speaking against those with whom there is disagreement.
Apologetic Theology:
* Theology that is done to defend the faith against those who oppose outside the church.

There are basically six arenas in which we can do theology:
* Tabloid Theology - Theology based on myths and stories (eg email forwards)
* Folk Theology - Ideas that have been around for ages but may have no basis
* Lay Theology - Critically construct theology based on evidence and understanding.
* Ministerial Theology - Similar to Lay theology, but is more methodical in their approach.
* Professional Theology - Serious study, usually done by researchers or people paid to study scripture.
* Academic Theology - Done with an overly critical or sceptical spirit.

How do we 'do' Theology? We are 'doing' theology when:
When we think about God.
When we share the Gospel.
When we interpret the Bible.
When we defend the faith.
When we plan for the future.

One of the key phrases is:
credo ut intelligam - "Faith seeking understanding"
